Port of the month December 2015: Fonseca Vintage Port 1948

1948 is the oldest „split declaration“ year, meaning that some producers have declared 1947, some 1948 and a few of them both years. Although 1947 is a superb Vintage in itself, the Ports from 48 are astonishing to drink right now. Graham’s CEO Paul Symington would even take the Graham Vintage Port 1948 to his lonely island, where I would love to accompany him…

Very dense, dark orange color. Balanced Bouquet with a hint of iodine, a strong herbal touch and perfectly matured toffee and honey. The palate reveals the same: lots of toffee and herbs, honey and a perfectly integrated acidity. Long, extremely long aftertaste with a multi-layered finish. 19
